- Adjusted risks (aHRs, 95% CIs) for mortality without stroke/MI history, by coffee intake (vs none):
- 1-6 cups/week: 0.86 (0.82-0.91).
- 1 cup/day: 0.86 (0.80-0.92).
- 2+ cups/day: 0.82 (0.77-0.89).

- Coffee was also linked to reduced mortality risk after MI:
- 1-6 cups/week: 0.69 (0.53-0.91).
- 1 cup/day: 0.78 (0.55-1.10).
- 2+ cups/day: 0.61 (0.41-0.90).
- No association was seen between coffee intake and poststroke survival.
- Most deaths were cardiovascular.
Study design
- Prospective, questionnaire-based cohort study, Japan, with 46,213 participants (478 poststroke, 1214 post-MI), ages 40-79 years.
